There are many different types and manufacturers of world war two German SS Daggers. Generally they are categorised in three different types.

Early SS Dagger also known as a 33 SS Dagger

Generally these daggers have an anodised scabbard along with Nickel silver fittings. The SS Scabbard like the NSKK is black in colour. Quite often you will find that the scabbards have been re painted during the war. This was because the original anodised surface would scratch easily. A painted scabbard does reduce the collect ability of these items for a few collectors but priced right it should not be a problem to sell.

The handle and fittings on the early daggers are generally made of Nickel Silver with an ebony grip.

The blade is generally where most of the value is when you are looking to sell an SS Dagger. Generally speaking you can identify it as being an early model 33 dagger because it will have a makers mark on the reverse. Some makers are more sought after than others and some rare dedicated SS Daggers can be very collectable so are always wanted for sale.

Mid period SS Daggers also known as Transitional SS Daggers

Generally these can be identified in a few main ways, firstly the fittings could be plated rather than solid Nickel silver. On the reverse of the blade there could be a makers mark or a makers mark with an RZM number. The quality of these is normally not quite so good as the 33 SS Daggers. But they are still very collectable.

Late period SS Daggers

These just have an RZM number on the back of the blade and the fittings are generally always plated with a few exceptions.

1936 Chained Daggers

Generally but not always these don’t have a makers mark on the blade and they can come with Nickel silver or plated fittings or a mixture of both. They have a chained hanger assembly and are very collectable and generally more valuable than a typical 33 model example.

Things effecting value

Firstly generally the earlier model the dagger the more saleable it is as these are the better produced examples so more collectors tend to buy them. Most of an SS Daggers value is in the condition of the blade. Rust, pitting, broken tips, and being polished heavily will all effect value. Generally it is always better to leave a dagger in original condition when considering selling it. The thing to do is wipe any dirt off the blade with a clean cloth and then apply some thin oil and place it back in the scabbard. Try not to clean the rest of the dagger as it can negatively affect the value.
